Anish S. Majumdar, PhD, CSO

VICE PRESIDENT RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Anish Majumdar, PhD, is the Vice President Research & Development of Cambium Oncology. Over the last 25 years, Dr. Majumdar’s research and product development focus has been centered around discovering novel biologics with anti-cancer and tissue regeneration potential. He has extensive experience in developing POC for early-stage scientific discoveries.  Anish has successfully conducted non-clinical and clinical research in the therapeutic areas of cancer immunotherapy and gene therapy for cancer, while in other cases, developing and testing cellular therapeutics for regenerative medicine. Dr. Majumdar’s initial R&D and product development started in RPR-Gencell/Aventis, where he worked on developing HSV-TK based gene therapy in combination with immunotherapy against breast cancer. From there, Dr. Majumdar moved to Geron Corporation in CA, where he spent the next decade developing human telomerase-based gene and dendritic cell-based vaccine and immunotherapy for cancer and generated solid POC in in vitro and preclinical animal models (Nair Nature Medicine 2000). Since telomerase gene is highly expressed in most cancer cells, replication competent oncolytic virus was constructed using hTERT promoter and found to be extremely effective in human tumor xenograft models (Irving Cancer Gene Therapy 2005). The dendritic cell vaccine, on the other hand used hTERT mRNA or adenovirus-hTERT as an antigen to trigger anti-cancer specific immune response in mice (Frolkis Cancer Gene Therapy 2003) and subsequently in human clinical trials. During the next ten years, Anish worked with two Indian companies to develop cell therapy products to treat various degenerative diseases (Gupta Stem Cell Translational Medicine 2017). His diverse experience in developing efficacious and safe therapeutics all the way from R&D through product development, non-clinical clinical studies and ultimately into clinical trials for some of these biologics have given him a unique experience on many aspects of drug development.

Dr. Majumdar received his B. Sc., M. Sc., and PhD from the University of Calcutta.  He did post-doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania and in the laboratory of Dr. Irving Weissman at Stanford University.
